In this tutorial, we'll guide you through the process of making your first interactive image.
If you want, you can follow along by using your own content. In that case, you will need:
- A base image: this is the media that you will be making interactive.
- An asset: a product or an informative item where you want more information to be shown about.
- A brand identity (optional): a style that you can use to create widgets (colors, fonts, padding,...)
If you like to learn how to create interactive videos, find a step-by-step guide here.
Step 1: Upload an image
The first step is to upload your base image. This is the image you are going to make interactive.
Starting from the home page, click the “Add media” button or simply drag & drop the image on the media page. Your image(s) will be uploaded automatically.
We'll return to this tab later.
Step 2: Upload products (a.k.a. Assets)
Next, it's time to add assets to Spott.
Assets contain information that will be shown on your tooltips such as a title, price, URL, or any custom field. An asset can be a product, a social media link, or just general information. In the example used here, we will use it as a product.
Go to the "Assets" tab on the left-hand side and click "Create Asset", then click "Create Asset" again.
A modal will open where you can enter a name, URL, and an image for the asset.
Click "Save" to add it to your assets.
Step 3: Create Widgets
Now you need to create some widgets that you will be adding to your interactive image later on.
Widgets are what take care of the type of interaction, but also the look and feel of the interactivity.
Go to the Widgets tab and click "New widget".
Then a modal will open where you can give your new widget a name, a fitting category, and pick what type of widget you want to use. Click "Add" to create the widget.
By using the control settings (or even custom CSS), you can fully customize them so they match your brand identity.
Step 4: Get to know the studio
Go back to the Project page and click the "Edit" button on the media that you want to make interactive.
Now the Spott Studio will open. This is the place where you will be combining your assets and widgets, turning your regular media into interactive content.
Step 5: Combine assets and widgets
Now is the time to bring it all together. Simply drag & drop the assets and widgets onto your media as shown below. Place it on the image in the right location to make your image interactive. Make sure to combine a widget an asset on top of each other.
You can change the position of your markers any time by dragging the box around the image.
You can switch between assets and widgets in the top left of the page.
Note: in the studio, you don't need to worry about saving. All changes are saved automatically.
You have successfully made your first interactive image!
What we've shown here is the most common workflow to make your image interactive. There are many more options along the way to customize your interactive content.
